2025 General Election

The next General Municipal Election is scheduled for October 20, 2025.

Municipal elections are held every four years, at which time residents elect one Mayor and six Councillors to a four-year term. In Fox Creek, Council members are elected at large, which means the Mayor and Councillors represent the entire population rather than a geographical ward. Voters choose up to six candidates for Council, and one candidate for Mayor.

The Town is required by the Local Authorities Election Act to maintain a register listing of all individuals who have filed a Notice of Intent to Run and Nomination Papers in the upcoming general election. This list will be continuously updated until the close of Nominations at 12 noon on Monday, September 22, 2025. The register will be publicly available on the Town’s website until December 31, 2025.

New for 2025

Individuals interested in running as candidates in their local jurisdiction are required to submit a written Notice of Intent to run Form to the Returning Officer of that jurisdiction.

Once the Notice of Intent Form is reviewed and confirmed as complete by the local jurisdiction, the individual is officially eligible to run as a candidate, accept campaign contributions, and incur campaign expenses, following the guidelines of the Local Authorities Election Act and the Expense Limits regulation.

The campaign period for the 2025 municipal election runs from January 1, 2022, through December 31, 2025.

For the 2025 municipal election, filing a Notice of Intent Form is a new requirement. Prospective candidates must submit the Notice of Intent Form at the Town Office (Returning or Substitute Returning Officer, 102 Kaybob Drive) prior to accepting campaign contributions or incurring campaign expenses. Once the Election Office receives a completed form, the candidate’s name will be added to the register of candidates published on Fox Creek’s website.

Candidates are required to provide a criminal record check as part of the application process. To obtain one, please visit the local Fox Creek RCMP detachment, located at 106 Kaybob Drive.

We strongly recommend initiating this process early, as processing times may vary depending on your last name and potential backlogs at the RCMP.

Other Legislated Requirements

All candidates are required to provide a $50.00 deposit to the Returning Officer at the Town Office.

1. When a bylaw has been enacted to mandate a deposit, the Returning Officer will accept the deposit in any of the following forms:

  • Cash

  • Money order
  • Debit or credit card

2. The deposit shall be refunded to the candidate under the following circumstances: (a) The candidate is declared elected. (b) The candidate secures a number of votes at least equal to half of the total votes cast for the candidate elected with the fewest votes. (c) The candidate withdraws their candidacy in accordance with section 32 (Local Authorities Election Act).

3. If a candidate passes away before the voting stations close on election day, the deposit will be returned to the candidate’s estate.

4. If the candidate does not obtain the number of votes as specified in subsection 2(b), the deposit will be transferred into the general revenue of the local jurisdiction where the deposit requirement was established.

All candidates must ensure that their Nomination Paper and Candidate’s Acceptance (Form 4) are signed by a minimum of five (5) electors who are:

  • Eligible to vote in this election, and
  • Residents of the Town of Fox Creek on the date they sign the Nomination Paper.

Candidates are strongly encouraged to secure more than the minimum required five (5) signatures to account for any unforeseen disqualifications.
