MARCH COUNCIL HIGHLIGHTS

Council welcomed a delegation from Fox Creek School Council who went on to present their plans for the school’s 50th celebration. Planned for the big event is a banquet and silent auction, which will include a car built by the school’s students.

Community Services reported that they received approval of a $22,688 New Horizons grant for Senior programs support. The money will be used to fund 2022/2023 programs, including intergenerational programming, enhancements to Volunteer Tax Program and enabling the grocery delivery program to run for another year.

The Director of Recreation mentioned that Child Mind is currently being offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays, but to date has unfortunately had no attendance. This is a pilot program that offers child minding while parents can take advantage of the building’s facilities. The program will be cancelled if attendance does not pick up during the three-month trial phase.

Hockey is wrapping up after another successful season. Residents who are still interested in taking advantage of ice time should do so quickly because the Pembina Arena’s ice is scheduled to come out on April 11, 2022.

The Town would like to send a huge thank you out to 3 Boys for sponsoring lunch for the PD Day held at the Multiplex on March 11, 2022, as well as for providing nerf guns and bullets for Nerf Wars games.

The Town would also like to thank the Province of Alberta, which has agreed to grant the Town $15,000.00 to upgrade outhouses at the Smoke and Iosegun lakes and beautify the campgrounds.

The Emergency Management Coordinator reported that committee members have all completed their ICS 200 training. They also participated in the 2020 FireSmart Tabletop Mock Emergency this past March 15, 2022, and have identified some areas that the Town can improve on in the Emergency Management department.

Council declared that Pitch-In Week will be held in Fox Creek on April 17 – 23, 2022. This year marks the 55th anniversary of Pitch-In Week across Canada. The Town is planning a weeklong event where residents can participate in cleanup efforts, in contests, and in games. This week will also be host to the Bulky Item Pickup, an annual event where residents can get rid of items that are too big to go out in the weekly garbage pickup and are generally meant for the Landfill.

Council has also declared June 18, 2022, as National Lemonade Day in Fox Creek and is offering support to the Lemonade Day program put on by Community Futures Yellowhead East. The program consists of children setting up a lemonade stand business and competing for prizes all in the hopes that they learn a bit about entrepreneurialism.
