Fox Creek Remembers: Honouring Our Heroes on Remembrance Day
Fox Creek, Alberta – November 11, 2024 – The community of Fox Creek came together for a solemn and heartfelt Remembrance Day service, organized by Fox Creek Legion #280. Despite the brisk November wind, veterans, cadets, families, and residents gathered to honour those who have served and sacrificed for the freedoms we enjoy today.
The event was made possible through the tireless efforts of many volunteers, including Lisa Peterson, a past president of Legion, who played a key role in organising the ceremony. From coordinating wreaths and candles to managing presentations and programs, countless hours were devoted to preparing a respectful and meaningful tribute to the fallen. The Legion faced challenges, such as hosting an outdoor service with limited resources, but the community’s resilience and commitment were evident throughout the event.
Recognising Contributions
During the service, Poppy Appreciation Certificates were presented to:
Tara, Anna, Connor, and Payton, for their contributions and calm handling of a medical incident during the 2023 ceremony.
Brandin Dorsey, for his eagerness and dedication to supporting the event.
Wade Martineau, for his unwavering participation in the Colour Party.
Grant Blakey, for his efforts in cadet support and ensuring the Colour Party’s precision.
Wade and Grant, with over 25 years of Colour Party and Honour Guard experience, exemplify dedication to this tradition.
The support of Freson Bros. was also acknowledged for their contributions to the Poppy Drives and ceremonies.
In addition, Cpt Ken Westling presented a $2,000 donation to the 721 Hawk Royal Canadian Air Cadets in recognition of their ongoing support. The presence of Cpl Annaert-van der Werf and Cpl Laflure from Lord Strathcona’s Horse Mounted Troop added a special and traditional element to the service.
The Importance of Community Service
The Remembrance Day service underscored the significant role of community service in uniting people and preserving shared history. Events like these demonstrate the power of collective effort and the impact of even the smallest contributions. Volunteers of all ages played a part, from helping with preparations to laying wreaths and participating in the ceremony, ensuring that the legacy of those who served is never forgotten.
Looking Ahead
Fox Creek continues to show its dedication to honouring veterans and supporting meaningful traditions. The hard work of the Legion and the community, led by individuals like Lisa Peterson, serves as a reminder that acts of service—whether through organising a public ceremony or participating in the Poppy Drive—connect us, teach valuable lessons, and strengthen community bonds.
As the community reflects on this year’s ceremony, it is clear that the values of respect, remembrance, and gratitude are alive and well in Fox Creek. Together, we remember, honour, and commit to building a future that upholds the sacrifices of the past.
